TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
Debilitating Knee Pain Can be Caused by a Number of Issues
-
Osteoarthritis
-
Meniscus tears
-
Cartilage defects
-
Ligament tears
When chronic knee pain from these and other factors prevent you from participating in daily activities, it may be time to consider total knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Hill will examine your knee(s) and take the time to sit with you one-on-one to discuss your pain, your options and your plans for a future that is no longer dictated by knee pain.
Unlike many general orthopedic surgeons, as a hip and knee specialist, Dr. Hill is also able to offer partial knee replacements. He’ll discuss this and other options with you personally.
The Total Knee Replacement Procedure
A total knee replacement surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components. These components are shaped in such a way that they allow continued, natural motion of the knee.
-
Hospital Stay: Plan on staying in the hospital 1-3 days for observation after your knee replacement surgery. Due to health complications, some patients may need to extend their stay a few days.
-
Recovery Time: Complete recovery from a knee replacement surgery is a long process, however patients are usually able to resume most activities within 6-8 weeks with significantly less pain than before the surgery. Full recovery is dependent on the right mix of rest, physical therapy and gradual increases in normal activity.
-
Other Notes: Many patients with knee issues have problems with both knees. Dr. Hill will examine your unique situation and recommend an approach to relieving pain in both knees while minimizing the amount of time you are unable to move freely.
